By Ameya Shenoy · Published 2026-03-11

Expand a Linux disk on AWS with commands to check disk usage, grow the partition and extend ext4 or XFS filesystems. A quick command reference by Ameya Shenoy.

- Increase disk size from AWS console or via API

- SSH into the machine and run the commands on the correct disk

```sh
# Check current disk usage
df -h
lsblk -f
# Grow the partition (if using GPT/partition table). here 1 is the number of the partition you want to grow
sudo growpart /dev/nvme0n1 1
# Extend the filesystem
# For ext4:
sudo resize2fs /dev/nvme0n1p1
```
